Adventure does not come with an expiration date.
At 63, I found myself facing one of Nicaragua鈥檚 most fascinating natural wonders: Telica Volcano. What began as a journey from Le贸n into the rugged countryside turned into a full day of hiking, volcanic landscapes, friendship, sunset views, and a nighttime descent that tested every bit of determination.
Telica is not an ordinary mountain. It is an active volcano, and the landscape around it feels raw and alive. Smoke rising from the crater, the unmistakable smell of sulfur, loose volcanic rock underfoot, and the enormous views across Nicaragua all reminded me that this was a very different kind of adventure.
From Le贸n Into the Wild
The day began in Le贸n, a city known for its history, colorful streets, and impressive volcanic surroundings. Leaving the city behind, our group headed toward Telica in a rugged Land Cruiser.
The road quickly became part of the adventure.
We traveled along rough mountain tracks, passing remote communities and stretches of countryside where the landscape seemed to become wilder with every kilometer. The journey was bumpy, but it offered a glimpse of a side of Nicaragua that many travelers never experience.
Eventually, we reached the area where the hike would begin.
The Climb Toward Telica鈥檚 Crater
The trail was challenging from the start. Instead of a smooth mountain path, we encountered rocky and uneven ground that demanded careful footing.
With every step, the surroundings became more dramatic. The vegetation gave way to a distinctly volcanic environment, and the feeling of approaching an active crater became impossible to ignore.
The hike took roughly an hour, but the difficulty made it feel like much more than a simple walk.
Then came the moment we had been working toward.
We reached the summit.
Standing Above an Active Volcano
Being beside Telica鈥檚 smoking crater was an experience that is difficult to put into words.
Gases escaped from the depths of the volcano, carrying the strong smell of sulfur into the air. Looking into the crater was a powerful reminder that the ground beneath our feet was part of a living geological system.
Yet the volcano was only half of the experience.
From the higher ground, Nicaragua stretched out across the horizon. Mountains, valleys, and distant landscapes created an incredible backdrop around the crater.
At 63, standing there felt particularly meaningful. The climb had required effort, but the reward was not simply reaching the top. It was the feeling of being somewhere extraordinary and still having the curiosity and energy to go looking for new experiences.
Waiting for a Nicaraguan Sunset
After exploring the summit and capturing plenty of photographs and video, we continued to another viewpoint to watch the sunset.
As daylight began to fade, the landscape changed completely.
The mountains became silhouettes, while the sky gradually filled with warm shades of color. After spending the day surrounded by volcanic rock and smoke, watching the sun disappear over Nicaragua provided a peaceful contrast to the rugged adventure.
It was one of those travel moments that cannot really be planned or recreated. You simply have to be there.
A Descent Through the Darkness
Our adventure became even more challenging after sunset.
Instead of returning before dark, we made our way back toward the vehicle under a night sky. The familiar trail had become a completely different environment.
Loose rocks and steep sections required extra concentration, and every step had to be taken carefully. Without daylight, the descent demanded patience and teamwork.
It was tiring, but there was also something exciting about navigating the volcanic landscape after dark.
When we finally reached the Land Cruiser, there was a genuine sense of accomplishment.
More Than Just a Volcano Hike
The drive back through the mountains gave everyone a chance to reflect on the day. What had started as a trip from Le贸n had turned into an experience packed with unexpected moments.
There was the rough journey into the countryside, the demanding climb, the first sight of the smoking crater, panoramic views, an unforgettable sunset, and a difficult descent through darkness.
But perhaps the biggest lesson from Telica was that age does not have to determine the adventures we pursue.
At 63, I was not trying to prove that hiking an active volcano is easy. It certainly wasn’t. Instead, the experience was a reminder that there are still mountains to climb, places to discover, and memories waiting to be made.
Telica gave me all three.
Keep Exploring
Nicaragua has a remarkable volcanic landscape, and Telica offered a close-up look at the power and beauty of that environment.
For me, this wasn’t simply another destination checked off a travel list. It was a day of challenge, discovery, spectacular scenery, and shared experiences with fellow travelers.
And perhaps that’s what adventure is really about: stepping outside your comfort zone, embracing the difficult moments, and discovering that the reward waiting at the end can be something you’ll remember for years.
At 63, the journey continues. 馃寢馃嚦馃嚠
