If you’re searching for a quiet beach destination in Central America that hasn’t been overrun by mass tourism, Las Peñitas, Nicaragua deserves a place at the top of your travel list. Located just 20 kilometers from the historic city of León, this peaceful fishing village offers golden beaches, rolling Pacific waves, colorful sunsets, fresh seafood, and an authentic atmosphere that feels worlds away from crowded tourist hotspots.
During my 10-day journey across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, Las Peñitas quickly became one of the most relaxing and memorable destinations of the entire trip. After hiking the challenging Telica Volcano, spending a day beside the Pacific Ocean was exactly what I needed—and it completely exceeded my expectations.
A Scenic Drive from León to Las Peñitas
My adventure began with a short drive from León, Nicaragua’s vibrant colonial city. As the city streets disappeared behind me, open countryside and coastal scenery welcomed me toward the Pacific Ocean.
The closer I got to Las Peñitas, the more peaceful everything became. Small fishing boats lined the shore, palm trees swayed in the ocean breeze, and the relaxed pace of life immediately made me feel at home.
Unlike many famous beach destinations, Las Peñitas has managed to maintain its authentic local charm while offering everything travelers need for a comfortable stay.
First Impressions of Las Peñitas
The moment I stepped onto the beach, I understood why so many travelers fall in love with this place.
Wide stretches of golden sand, powerful Pacific waves, and endless ocean views created an unforgettable first impression. There were no crowded resorts or noisy beach clubs—just nature, local fishermen, surfers, and travelers enjoying the simple beauty of Nicaragua’s coastline.
Sometimes the best travel experiences are the simplest ones.
Walking Along Nicaragua’s Beautiful Pacific Coast
One of my favorite parts of the visit was taking a long walk along the shoreline.
The cool ocean breeze, crashing waves, and peaceful surroundings made every step enjoyable. Along the way I explored fascinating volcanic rock formations, collected colorful seashells, and watched seabirds flying overhead.
The rugged coastline adds a unique character to Las Peñitas that makes it feel very different from many tropical beaches around the world.
Photography lovers will especially appreciate the dramatic scenery throughout the day.
Watching Local Surfers Ride the Pacific Waves
Las Peñitas has quietly earned a reputation as one of Nicaragua’s best surfing destinations.
Even if you don’t surf yourself, it’s exciting to watch experienced locals glide across the powerful Pacific waves. The consistent surf attracts backpackers and surfers from around the world while still keeping the relaxed atmosphere intact.
Whether you’re learning your first wave or simply enjoying the view from the beach, the surfing culture adds plenty of energy to this peaceful destination.
Breakfast with an Ocean View
After spending the morning exploring the coastline, I stopped at a beachfront restaurant for a traditional Nicaraguan breakfast.
Fresh local ingredients, delicious flavors, and an incredible ocean view created one of the most enjoyable meals of my Central America trip.
Simple moments like sitting beside the Pacific Ocean while enjoying local food often become the memories that last the longest.
Why Las Peñitas Is Worth Visiting

Continuing the Journey to Granada
As much as I wanted to stay longer, every adventure eventually continues.
After enjoying the beach and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, it was time to leave Las Peñitas behind and travel toward Granada, Nicaragua’s famous colonial city known for its colorful architecture, historic churches, vibrant plazas, and beautiful location on Lake Nicaragua.
The contrast between the quiet coastline and Granada’s lively streets made the journey even more exciting.
